Melograno - This Italian gourmet bakery and bistro is my new favorite restaurant in Cape Coral ..... I love the food, the atmosphere, and the excellent service!
UPDATE September 2017: Melograno has permanently closed and will reopen with new owners as Gather.
The waterfront restaurant is located on the shopping promenade at the Cape Coral Westin with views of the marina at Tarpon Point.
They have been in business since 1889 in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy ......... home to 5-star restaurants and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Paganini, Verdi, Pavarotti, and Romeo and Juliette. Organic, whole grains, seasonal, and local ingredients are used to create fresh, healthy, and simple yet sophisticated food that is a pleasure to dine on.
A contemporary elegance characterizes the dining room ............ sit at cafe tables outside, or inside either at tables, a casual drink rail, or even a cushy couch!
I first went for brunch and thoroughly enjoyed my Puffed Frittata with Bacon. It was served with a heavenly Pro Secco Fruit Salad ......... it tasted so fresh with the sparkling wine, lemon zest, and basil ......... mmmmmmmm.
Served with my breakfast, were slices of crusty Italian bread with cinnamon, a perfect accompaniment.
As for beverages, you can get wood-toasted coffees and teas from around the world.
The bakery will continue to expand, their Italian pastry chef is making sure everything is just right.
I was fortunate to be able to sample a biscotti type of cookie made from a recipe that goes back to the 1500's, and some delectable pastries with my meal .......... one with Irish Cream, one with caramelized apples and pine nuts, and one with pear, cocoa, and coffee.
Several more egg, pasta, and seafood dishes are featured for brunch so you can choose breakfast or lunch depending on your mood.
I had to go back for dinner! I love interesting combinations of ingredients, artful displays on the plate, and a romantic ambience ........ and that's precisely what Melograno serves up.
Although there are expensive dishes, you can also order one of their pasta dinners for under $15.
I was intrigued with their pasta dish in an eggplant bundle called Sformatino di Pasta alla Norma, made with rigatoni, bechamel, and tomato sauce.
It was so incredible, I keep daydreaming about it! I'm always amazed at what can be done with a few simple ingredients.
I enjoyed it further by dipping one of their yummy breads in the sauce, then dipping the bread in pureed vegetables in chili oil that was served with the bread. I think my favorite were the breadsticks!
Also on the menu are starters, salads, soups, and entrees ......... all flavors enhanced with special wine pairings from their wine menu.
I ended my meal with a sample of 3 different Creme Brulee's ...... coffee, blueberry, and pomegranate. Each one was better than the other!
it appears that they change their menu often, so you'll want to go back again and again!
You can purchase gift and grocery items from Italy as well as bakery items. Look for upcoming events and expansion of the menu, wine list, and hours of operation.
Presently, they're open Wednesday - Saturday from 4-10PM, and for Sunday, I think they open at 11AM and serve brunch till 2 or 3PM.
