Kids Fishing DerbyThe Kids Fishing Derby is a fun family event at Cape Coral's Yacht Club Beach. Since Cape Coral is known for great fishing, you may want to get your children involved with this sport, and if you haven't fished before, this is a good place to start.
It takes place on a Saturday in June right on the Yacht Club Beach pier, from 8-11AM for ages 5-15, with registration at 7:30AM. For only $8, contestants get free bait, angler education, two hours of fishing, lunch, a goody bag, awards and certificates. Each child needs to bring their own fishing rod and tackle ........ and bringing their Dad or Grampa wouldn't hurt either!
The child who wins is the one who gets the most fish that are bigger than 3" .......... and alive! Officials measure each fish that is caught and brought forward from each contestant. When I went to the fishing derby, the kid in the lead was one little girl who had caught 12 fish, with half an hour left to go in the competition. I wouldn't be surprised if she won!
