Did you know that airplanes used to take off and land on SW 47th Terrace when Cape Coral was first being developed? And, did you know there was an actual airport near what is now Del Prado and SE 21st Street? It had a control tower and 2 lighted runways. It was basically used for sales flights to show prospective buyers lots around the Cape as well as some commercial flights to Marco Island and Miami. The airport closed in 1965 once the Cape Coral Bridge opened in 1964 and flights were operated from Page Field in Ft Myers. 1) Cape Coral is #6 on a list of "Top Ten List of Best Cities for Job Growth" by Forbes.com. 2) Cape Coral real estate property values increased by 8.63% from last year ...... and, 77 single-family home permits, the highest number since May of 2007, was issued in July. Code Compliance and volunteers have made much progress in addressing problems with foreclosures by identifying, cleaning, processing, and selling abandoned properties. 3) Cape Coral has the lowest water and sewer rates in Lee County. In 2016, the Cape's 30-year contract with LCEC will expire. City government is looking into alternative ways to ensure customers get the best electric services and lowest costs. They may end up establishing a Municipal Electric Utility (MEU), a power system owned and operated by a local jurisdiction, or negotiating a new contract with LCEC. 4) Cape Coral firefighters have made changes to their pension plans to save $65.5 Million over the next 25 years for taxpayers. 5) The Economic Development Office has been flooded with visitors inquiring about commercial properties and business development in Cape Coral.
